WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Winter Haven Police are asking for help in identifying those responsible for causing significant damage to the baseball fields at the Chain of Lakes Baseball Complex, which is located at 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd.
Police said the grounds crew at the baseball fields discovered damage in the right/center field area of the outfield Saturday. The field was last observed in good condition on Friday Feb. 7 at 6 p.m., police said.
Sometime during the night, police said the suspects drove what appears to be a utility-type vehicle on the field causing significant gouges and tearing up a large portion of the outfield.
The fields are set to be utilized for the Russmatt Central Florida Baseball Invitation within the next couple of weeks, police said.
"Our city takes great care in preparing the fields to host the Russmatt Events," Chief Gary Hester said in a news release Saturday. "Someone may have thought this was funny, but this type of blatant disregard for city property will not be taken lightly."
Winter Haven Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this activity to call 863-401-2256 or heartland crime stoppers at 1-800-226-tips (8477); Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
