MIAMI (AP/970 WFLA) - Two men have died while swimming off Florida beaches in the past two days.
Volusia County officials say three people swimming off the Ponce Inlet got caught in a strong rip current Tuesday afternoon. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that two people managed to get to safety, but a 22-year-old man went under. He was later spotted by a sheriff's helicopter and unresponsive when pulled from the water.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports that a man in his 60s was swimming with his grandson at Hanna Park Wednesday when a rip current caught him. Other swimmers at the beach tried to help when they heard the child screaming, but one Good Samaritan told the Florida Times-Union that the victim appeared to be dead already when they got to him.
