Rap music veteran MC Lyte will be honored for her contributions to hip-hop at this year's BET Hip Hop Awards.
Lyte will receive the I Am Hip Hop Award at the September 28th awards ceremony. She joins a who's who list of hip-hop pioneers who have received the award, including Grandmaster Flash, KRS-One, Russell Simmons, Ice Cube, Salt N' Pepa, LL Cool J and Rakim. In celebration of the honor, MC Lyte is hosting an after-party following the BET Hip Hop Awards.
The festivities will take place at Atlanta's Museum Bar. Hosted by Snoop Lion, the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards are set to air October 15th at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
MC Lyte's 27-year long career has produced eight solo albums and four compilation albums. She has also had numerous guest appearances on various records.
Her single "Ruffneck" earned her the distinction of the first female solo rapper to be nominated for a Grammy. The track also earned the rapper her first gold certification.
