Patricia Carroll is an African-American camera woman who is working at the RNC for CNN. On Tuesday night, witnesses saw a pair of unnamed female attendees throw peanuts at Carroll and yell racist comments.
David Shuster (@DavidShuster), a host on Current TV, witnessed the incident and tweeted, "GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying "This is how we feed animals."
CNN released the following statement about the incident: "CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment."
The RNC also released a statement: "Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated."
Carroll, who will not do any more interviews about the incident did tell the Maynard Institute, "I hate that it happened, but I'm not surprised at all." She also added, "I can't change these people's hearts and minds. No, it doesn't feel good. But I know who I am. I'm a proud black woman. A lot of black people are upset. This should be a wake-up call to black people... People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we're gone further than we have."
